Dear Organised Olive,

I have been tasked with sourcing a murder mystery evening for my team. If I’m honest the idea doesn’t excite me as I feel they are outdated and overdone. What can I do?

Aiden, Ireland

Dear Aiden,

Ah, the old ‘who dunnit’. I understand your trepidation, a badly done murder mystery is a miserable thing to sit through. In my experience for a successful murder mystery evening it is worth considering more than just the act itself. The best experiences come through those that are immersive, therefore if you are able, I would ensure the venue is fitting to the activity or at least the room booked for the evening is. It can be very difficult to get into the mood if you are being asked to pretend you are in the 19th Century and you are sat in a modern stark box. Secondly, and most importantly, is choosing the right supplier. I went to a delightful murder mystery a few months ago and afterwards when chatting to the lovely team I found out that they were West End actors. I can’t tell you what a difference it made, the balance in the storyline between detail, intrigue and comedy were just right. You should certainly choose a supplier based on either a recommendation or testimonials or you could ask your lovely event agency and they will do all the hard work for you.

Good luck and let me know who did it!

Kind regards,

Olive
